An Indian wedding is not a single event — it is a multi-day, multi-ceremony celebration that tests every makeup product you own. As someone who has worked on bridal parties across Delhi and NCR for over seven years, I have developed a precise approach to making makeup genuinely last. Here is what actually works.

Step 1: Start with a thorough skin prep

Hydrated skin holds makeup far better than dry skin. In the days leading up to the function, keep your skin well moisturised, avoid exfoliating too close to the date, and apply a generous primer on the day. Let the primer fully set before any foundation goes on — at least two to three minutes.

Step 2: Use a long-wear, full-coverage foundation

For wedding functions, especially those running outdoors or through the night, choose a long-wear foundation with a matte or satin finish. Avoid anything described as "skin-like" or "second-skin" — these are often too thin and will break down quickly. Set it with a translucent powder and focus on the T-zone.

Step 3: Bake your under-eyes and high points

Baking — applying a heavy layer of loose powder over concealer and letting it sit for five to ten minutes before dusting off — is one of the best techniques for all-day wear. It sets the under-eye and prevents creasing through even the most tearful moments.

Step 4: Waterproof everything around the eyes

Indian weddings are emotional. Use waterproof kajal, a waterproof eyeliner, and a tubing mascara (which wraps around each lash individually and comes off only with warm water, not tears). Eyeshadow primer under your shadow prevents creasing over a long day.

Step 5: Use a setting spray liberally

A quality setting spray applied both before and after your full makeup is the single biggest difference between makeup that lasts four hours and makeup that lasts fourteen. Hold it at arm's length and mist in a figure-of-eight motion. I use it on every client before they leave the chair.

Step 6: Lip liner is non-negotiable

Line and fill in your entire lip with a lip liner that matches your lipstick before applying colour. This acts as an anchor and dramatically extends the wear. Blot, apply a second coat, and blot again before the final layer of colour.

What to keep in your touch-up kit

For the day itself, keep these five things close: blotting papers (not powder, which can cake), a pressed powder for quick top-ups, your lipstick and liner, a mini setting spray, and a fine brush for rescuing any eyeliner smudges. These will handle 90% of touch-up situations through a full wedding day.
